A Gardena man who was found guilty of pistol whipping and robbing a gas station attendant in Santa Monica has been sentenced to 19 years in state prison, Santa Monica police said Sunday.

Karl Lamonte Wesley, 31, was sentenced on Feb. 3.

SMPD Sgt. Jay Trisler said forensics lifted fingerprints from the ARCO gas station located in the 2000 block of Lincoln Boulevard where the robbery occurred. Detectives with the Santa Monica Police Department contacted witnesses and they positively identified Wesley.

Wesley was arrested on May 20, 2010 and booked for armed robbery. Police said he went into the gas station on May 7, 2010 and pointed a gun at the cashier. He demanded money.

When the cashier refused, Wesley went behind the counter and hit the clerk with his pistol. The suspect then fled on foot with a few hundred dollars, police said.

The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office filed felony charges of robbery, assault with a deadly weapon and being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm.
