In an effort to get Santa Monicans to shop in their neighborhoods, the Buy Local Santa Monica Committee has launched the 3/50 Project Challenge that invites people to blog about their three favorite local, independently-owned business in exchange for a chance to win prizes.

To be eligible for a prize from one of the Buy Local partners, shoppers must commit to spending $50 over the course of one month at three businesses in town and then go to and write about their experiences. A lucky blogger will be selected at random and awarded a prize.

The featured prize for January is a pair of tickets to an upcoming show at the Morgan-Wixson Theatre. The drawing will take place Jan. 31, at 5 p.m.

The buy local campaign is an initiative developed by local businesses and City Hall to encourage residents to shop in Santa Monica, helping to cut down on car trips while sustaining mom-and-pop shops. If 20 percent of Santa Monica’s residents committed to spending $50 every month locally, it would pump over $9.6 million in the local economy, said Jennifer Taylor, a senior development analysts with City Hall’s Economic Development Department.

“As we’ve found already, our Buy Local Santa Monica businesses are committed to purchasing from other local businesses and they invest in the Santa Monica community,” Taylor said in a press release. “They support local charities, they donate proceeds to local schools, they provide staff to help with beach clean ups and they commit to employing SM residents.”
