If you’ve ever been shopping in Downtown, it’s probably happened to you before. You’re loaded up with purchases and ready to head home, but there’s just one problem — you can’t find your car.

Well those parking in the structures adjacent to Santa Monica Place now have a tool they can use to locate their car.

The tool, developed by Park Assist, uses a digital camera to capture license plate numbers of cars parked in the two structures. Shoppers can then use kiosks located in the structures to locate their cars using the license plate number.

The new system also features a digital display at the end of each row of parking spaces to let drivers know how many spaces are available on each side of the isle. Green and red lights alert drivers to vacant spaces.

Officials with Santa Monica Place said the parking system is the first of its kind.

“We want every aspect of the Santa Monica Place experience to exceed our visitors’ expectations, and we know parking throughout Santa Monica can be challenging,” said Doug Roscoe, senior property manager at Santa Monica Place.

The mall’s owner, Macerich Co., purchased the new technology and had it installed in the two City Hall-owned structures, Roscoe said.

The mall also offers valet parking on Second and Fourth streets.
