The Santa Monica Police Department has joined the social networking website Facebook and are encouraging residents to “like” them.

The SMPD had 106 friends as of Thursday afternoon. Users of Facebook can hit a “like” tab on the website and follow another user’s feed. The SMPD uses Facebook to provide members with crime bulletins and updates on arrests or other issues, all with the intent of better communicating with the public.

“The Santa Monica PD Facebook page will keep our community in the loop,” said Police Chief Tim Jackman.

Police are already using the website to aid with locating missing children and suspects, to provide notifications about DUI checkpoints and to publicize outreach programs and other events, said Sgt. Jay Trisler, the department’s public information officer.

“We are confident that this information will be useful to our community,” Trisler said.
