WEST L.A. — Veterans in need of assistance are being encouraged to apply for a bed at the new Veterans Home of California — West Los Angeles, a 396-bed, long-term assisted living and nursing facility located near the VA hospital on Wilshire Boulevard.

The home provides veterans who qualify with a living environment that “protects their dignity and contributes to their feeling of self-reliance and self-worth, fostering a sense of community and camaraderie,” said Jeanne Bonfilio, public information officer with the California Department of Veterans Affairs.

Services provided include meals, healthcare, dental care, pharmacy services, field trips and activities in a secure environment.

The two levels of care include: a Residential Care Facility for the Elderly, or assisted-living unit, currently open; and a Skilled Nursing Facility including an Alzheimer’s/dementia or “memory care” unit, estimated to open in late 2011. The estimated cost is $253 million and was funded in partnership with the United States Department of Veterans Affairs.

Fees are based upon a veteran’s income. Veterans desiring to be considered for residency must be residents of California, age 62 or older — or younger if disabled — and have served honorably in the military. Veterans seeking admission or a tour should call (424) 832-8204.
