CITYWIDE — When the week began, there were four varsity teams from local Santa Monica schools participating in the California Interscholastic Federation Southern Section girls’ volleyball playoffs, but by week’s end, only two squads were left standing.
One of those teams is Lighthouse Christian Academy, the No. 2 seed from the Coastal League. Lighthouse, which ended the season with a 12-4 overall record, beat Lone Pine High School on Thursday night to advance to tonight’s quarterfinal round game against Riverside Christian Academy, set to be an away match for LCA.
Riverside is the No. 1 overall seed from CIF-SS Div. 5-AA and were the Warrior League champions. They finished the regular season with a 14-6 record, and had a bye in the first round of the 28-team Div. 5-AA bracket.
LCA won their second round match against Lone Pine in three games, with scores of 25-14, 25-18, and 25-13 after also sweeping the California Academy of Math and Sciences in round one last Tuesday night.
The single elimination CIF-SS varsity girls’ volleyball tournament will continue with quarterfinal-round games tonight; all games are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m., unless otherwise noted.
The winning teams will advance to their division’s semifinal games to be played next Tuesday, Nov. 16. The championship finals will be conducted next weekend in a two-day, 10-match extravaganza on Nov. 19 and 20 at Cypress College, in north Orange County.
