LIGHTHOUSE — It’s been a positive season for first-year Lighthouse Christian Academy head coach Stephanie Sommer as she led the girls’ volleyball team to a 6-2 record in Coastal League play and a 12-4 winning record on the season as they once again are eligible for the California Interscholastic Federation Southern Section playoffs.

After switching during the off-season from the Harbor League, the Saints have proved they deserved the promotion to the more competitive Coastal League. The CIF-SS top 10 pollsters agree — they have Lighthouse ranked No. 7 in Division 5-AA, the only team in the league to end the season ranked despite trailing one team in the win column for the league’s standings.

Two other league teams did manage to receive mentions as notables for the division in the polls — Rolling Hills and Vista Mar — but it is clear Lighthouse is favored to advance the furthest in the postseason.

Last season, the Saints went 10-8 and finished 5-3 in the Harbor League. They were eligible for the CIF playoffs, getting to the second round before being eliminated by Boron High School. Lighthouse now plays in the Coastal League along with New Roads and Wildwood high schools.

Playoff brackets for the CIF-SS volleyball playoffs, which start next week and run through the end of November, will be released Sunday. But there is no doubt Sommer will do all she can to have her girls prepared to make it even further in the postseason than they did last year.
