Students in Santa Monica College adjunct art professor John Zarcone’s beginning oil and intermediate painting classes swept the cash awards for the Pico Festival’s “Paintings of Pico Boulevard Contest,” held Oct. 16.

The $300 first place prize went to Yuhao Liao in the beginning class; the $200 second place award went to Omar Solis, also in the beginning class; and the $100 third place prize went to Felipe Ramirez, in the intermediate class. Honorable mentions were awarded to Debora Edmunds, Daisy Perez and Karin Jackson.

The aim of the show was “to call attention to the wide diversity of artistic possibilities available along Pico Boulevard in Santa Monica. From the mountains to the ocean, from the theaters to auto shops, from the flowers to the graves, Pico Boulevard is vibrant, artistic, dangerous, educated, neglected and polished.”

The show was judged by a panel of local artists and curators. The paintings were exhibited during the Pico Festival at the Morgan-Wixson Theatre on Pico Boulevard. The contest was organized by Randy Ball of Artistic Picture Frames, 3129 Pico Blvd.
