City Hall is celebrating the 16th anniversary of its Sustainability City Plan all week with a series of free events taking place in various locations. From Sept. 20-25, participating restaurants and retailers will also be offering discounts and freebies for shoppers using reusable bags or food containers.
The “Buy Local. Be Sustainable” campaign supports the city’s sustainability efforts by encouraging residents to buy local and sustainable products in order to support the community and raise awareness about the issue.
In 1994, the City Council passed the sustainable plan in hopes of reducing beach pollution and solid waste and water use by 328 million gallons annually. Currently, the plan is guided by eight principles, including resource conservation, transportation and housing.
The city will unveil the 2010 Community Sustainability Report Card tonight at the Main Branch Library at 7:30 p.m.
