The Santa Monica Police Department will be conducting a sobriety/driver’s license checkpoint this Friday night in the 300 block of Pico Boulevard, police said.
Officers will be contacting drivers in Santa Monica to see if they are under the influence of drugs or alcohol and to see if they have a valid driver’s license and car insurance. This is the sixth checkpoint held over the last 12 months, police said.
Funding for the checkpoint was provided by a grant from the Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The SMPD reminds drivers to take a car or catch a ride from a designated driver if they plan on drinking.
Since 2005, the number of alcohol-involved fatalities has dropped, but law enforcement and the public must continue to work toward zero deaths, police said.
