It’s more art than commerce, but it may give a boost to the businesses that call Montana Avenue home.
In the first of what organizers hope will become an annual event, merchants on the famous shopping street are transforming their stores and restaurants into Santa Monica’s longest art gallery this Thursday night from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Called the Montana Avenue Artwalk, the aim is to draw people to businesses along the 10-block shopping district, from Seventh Street to 17th Street, with the work of more than 50 visual artists and live musicians. Some businesses will also offer refreshments, dining specials other surprises.
“This is just kind of a fun community outreach event to raise cultural awareness,” said Mark Wain, chairman of the Montana Avenue Merchants Association, which is organizing the art walk.
