DOWNTOWN — Pacifica Christian’s baseball team may be young, but after a rash of awards and the Seawolves’ recent run through the CIF-SS Division 7 playoffs, don’t call them inexperienced.
Despite an 8-1 semi-finals loss to Cornerstone Christian on June 1, Pacifica built on last season’s second-round appearance by outscoring its first three playoff opponents, 55-8, and watching five players earn all-league honors.
“We’re proud of the guys considering they’re really young,” Head Coach Julian Chavez said.
Playing with a roster consisting entirely of freshmen and sophomores — save for junior Austin Cortina — the Seawolves opened the playoffs by demolishing Weaver, 34-2. They then downed Temecula Prep, 14-2, before grabbing a 7-4 victory over New Roads to set up their matchup with Cornerstone.
Such accomplishments did not go unnoticed.
Kevin Hammer was named All-Heritage League Pitcher of the Year, while Cortina and Keenan Pierandozzi-Howes were selected to the first team.
The second team featured Zach McMillan and Athen Shelp.
“I was really proud of the year,” Pierandozzi-Howes said. “It was a team effort more than anything.”
Chavez said the all-league rosters were decided on May 17, though he is unsure when they were officially released. He added that he expects CIF-SS honors to be announced by the end of the week.
