The Los Angeles Regional Foodbank has launched a free app for the iPhone. The new Pantry Locator provides a portal for users to make cash donations using software via their iPhone or iPod and searches for local food pantries using online GPS technology.
SPINX, Inc., a leading Los Angeles-based Web design and development services provider, developed the Pantry Locator App for the Foodbank pro bono, in an effort to encourage L.A. metro area donations and help social workers and community organizations aid residents in finding local agencies where they can receive food assistance.
In February of this year, the Foodbank reported that in 2009 a record 983,400 Los Angeles County residents received food assistance from food pantries, soup kitchens and shelters served by the Foodbank. This total represents nearly 1 in 10 residents of Los Angeles County.
“Local pantries are struggling to meet the growing demand for food assistance and this new tool will make it easy for those who want to help to do so at the click of a button,” said Michael Flood, president and CEO of the Los Angeles Regional Foodbank. “We’re always searching for innovative ways to reach a broader audience and encourage community involvement.”
The Los Angeles Regional Foodbank Pantry Locater App requires iPhone OS 3.0 or later and the software is now available free of charge online at iTunes.com.
