A league title could be just three games away for the Vikings boys basketball team.

A 72-52 win over Inglewood on Wednesday improved Samohi’s record to 17-6 overall and more importantly 7-0 in Ocean League play. With a road win over Beverly Hills tonight, Samohi can clinch at least a co-league title. Inglewood is currently second in league, but Samohi has defeated them twice this season. The last time Samohi won the Ocean League was during the 2007-08 season.

While Beverly Hills is just 12-12 overall and 2-5 in league, there is still a mathematical chance they can clinch one of the three automatic bids from the league. This makes Samohi’s Head Coach James Hecht a bit nervous heading into tonight’s pivotal game.

“They are going to be hungry and looking to seek revenge from the first time we played them,” Hecht said. “We’ve warned our guys to not get complacent.”

Hecht said that chief among his concerns is Beverly Hills forward Greg Townsend, son of NFL great Greg Townsend. Hecht considers him a matchup problem and has instructed his post players to keep their eyes on him.

“We have to be aware of him,” Hecht said, “keep him off the boards.”
