After months of hard environmental work, Santa Monica High School senior Megan Kilroy is reaping the rewards — rewards other than the knowledge of having saved the lives of animals and people alike.

Kilroy is a recipient of a HALO (Helping And Leading Others) award and will appear on cable network Nickelodeon today at 5 p.m. in the first TeenNick HALO awards ceremony. The awards are given to teenagers in the United States who make a positive impact in their community.

Kilroy was also awarded $20,000 for her achievements as captain of Team Marine, Samohi’s marine science and environmental club. Half of the money will go toward her college education, and half of the money will help continue her work with Team Marine.

During her time as captain, Kilroy led several marches to ban plastic bags in Santa Monica. She has also helped to collect thousands of dollars worth of plastic bottles and bottle caps, which the team recycled using the money earned to purchase water purifying devices for people in impoverished nations.

Justin Timberlake, Hayden Panettiere, LeBron James, Alicia Keys and Nick Cannon will host and present the awards to Kilroy and three other teenagers. The other teenagers are being awarded for their efforts in issues such as HIV/AIDS, scoliosis and life in the ghetto.

The ceremony will be rebroadcast at 9 p.m. today on Nickelodeon.
