As popular as gardening is in Santa Monica, 8 square miles cannot accommodate gardens for all 94,000 residents. As a result, the city has created a garden sharing registry to meet everyone’s needs.

The registry matches homeowners with yard space but no time for gardening to experienced or interested gardeners with no space for themselves to plant. The community garden waiting list is long, leaving few alternatives, until now.

Once registered, owners choose from a list of avid gardeners and create a partnership with specifications according to each party. They discuss schedules, supply storage, gardening projects, costs of seeds and supplies and length of commitment. Though home and property owners provide land and water, gardeners actually cultivate the land.

The resulting crops are shared between the landowners and the gardeners.
