Santa Monica and Malibu high schools are some of the nation’s best, according to Newsweek, which released its list of the top 1,500 U.S. public schools.

Newsweek ranked Santa Monica High School at number 251 and Malibu High School at number 313.

The rankings were based on the number of Advanced Placement, Intl. Baccalaureate and/or Cambridge tests taken by all students at a school in 2008 divided by the number of graduating seniors.

“We are proud of our schools and the level of achievement that they produce,” said Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District Superintendent Tim Cuneo. “This is the result of the district’s commitment to excellence and the dedication of our teachers, support staff, and administration to the success of all students. A special thank you goes to our parents and communities for their continued support and commitment to our efforts to prepare students to contribute and compete globally.”
