CITYWIDE — Santa Monica High School’s boys’ soccer team leads a number of locally-based clubs into this year’s playoffs.
Samohi received the No. 1 seed in the California Interscholastic Federation Southern Section Division 4 playoffs, it was announced on Monday.
The Vikings open at home against the winner of a wild card matchup between El Segundo and Whittier Pioneer. The game, scheduled for Friday at 3:30 p.m., will take place at either John Adams Middle School or Santa Monica College. Team officials would rather play the game at SMC, which has better stands for spectators.
“It’s nice to sit at No. 1, but this will identify us as a target,” Samohi head coach Serafin Rodriguez said. “We’re the team to beat.”
Samohi’s girls’ squad, coming off a first place finish in the Ocean League, will also host a Division 4 first-round game. The Vikings will play nearby Malibu on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. That game too may be played at either SMC or JAMS. That announcement is expected to be made today.
Crossroads joins Samohi as a school sending both its boys’ and girls’ sides. The boys will travel to Grace Brethren on Friday in Division 6 action. The girls will also be on the road. The Roadrunners will travel to Montclair on Tuesday in a Division 4 wild card game. The winner will face Oaks Christian on Thursday.
New Roads has qualified its boys’ team. The Jaguars will play La Sierra Academy on the road on Friday in Division 7.
