PICO BLVD — McCabe’s Guitar Shop on Pico Boulevard has joined a growing list of concert venues that have canceled planned performances by alternative folk singer Michelle Shocked after she made anti-gay remarks at a show on Sunday.

Witnesses say Shocked, a born-again Christian, told the crowd at San Francisco’s Yoshi’s, “When they stop Prop. 8 and force priests at gunpoint to marry gays, it will be the downfall of civilization, and Jesus will come back,” and “You can go on Twitter and say, ‘Michelle Shocked says God hates fags.’”

The staff at the venue finally turned off the stage lights and pulled the plug on her performance, according to a report by USA Today.

Shocked was scheduled to perform at McCabe’s Saturday. An employee at the venue said the concert was canceled Monday. The venue’s website confirms the cancellation. McCabe’s concert director could not be immediately reached for comment.

LGBT activist John Becker has created a petition on Change.org demanding Shocked be held responsible for her hate speech and urging more than a dozen venues to cancel her upcoming shows. So far, nine venues have canceled, Becker said.

“Freedom of speech and artistic expression are critically important, but this isn’t free speech,” Becker said in a statement on Change.org. “This is hate speech. And in a world where LGBT people are bullied from the pulpit, on the playground, and at the polls, anti-gay hate speech can have serious consequences including legitimizing bullying and hate crimes, and increasing victims’ risk of anxiety, depression, and suicide.”

Shocked’s website did not reflect the concert cancellations as of Tuesday morning.

On her Facebook page, Shocked wrote Sunday, “Truth is leading to painful confrontation #shortsharpshocked.” For the “Favorite Quotes” entry, Shocked has, “Free speech means the right to shout ‘theatre’ in a crowded fire. Abbie Hoffman.”

A fan by the name of Sue Jeffers posted on her page: “i certainly hope you are not speaking of your ill advised verbal assault on a large part of your fan base and fellow human beings. the only truth in what you said, perhaps, is what your opinion has become. it is the height of hubris and pride to claim that you hold ‘THE TRUTH’ because you read it somewhere. i hope you find your way out of the wilderness you seem to have stumbled into.”

Shocked got her last name following an arrest in a political protest called “The War Chest Tour,” during the 1984 Democratic National Convention in San Francisco, according to the singer-songwriter’s online bio.
