WILSHIRE BLVD — Santa Monica police are investigating the cause of a fatal traffic accident in which a 66-year-old man was struck while crossing Wilshire Boulevard Thursday night.

The accident was the first deadly collision of 2010, police said. Santa Monica’s last fatal traffic accident occurred Dec. 15, 2009.

Police said a 19-year-old man who was driving the vehicle that struck Santa Monican Herceg Vlado was not immediately cited in the accident. He was released but could face charges once the investigation is complete, said SMPD Sgt. Jay Trisler.

Vlado was walking south across Wilshire Boulevard in a crosswalk near 10th Street about 9 p.m. when he was struck by a vehicle driving westbound. Vlado was treated by Santa Monica Fire Department before being transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Trisler said.

Police are asking the public for help with the investigation. Witnesses are urged to call Investigator Chris Dawson at (310) 458-8954 or the Watch Commander at (310) 458-8495.
