CITYWIDE — Residents are constantly encouraged to donate to public schools, however it can be hard to write a check in the current economic climate. To account for this, the Santa Monica Malibu Education Foundation is giving people the chance to donate in another way — by having fun.
The foundation has planned multiple ‘Summer of Fun’ events, occurring from now until Aug. 15., which will give everyone who is interested the chance to raise money for SMMUSD schools. Admission to the events and purchases made from restaurants in partnership with the foundation will go towards reduced class sizes and the restoration of counseling, library, and music programs in the fast-approaching school year.
Following the defeat of Measure A in May, the foundation began campaigning to raise funds for SMMUSD schools. Appropriately called Save Our Schools, the campaign which has already raised over $750,000 is now in it’s final push to generate money before September.
The ‘Summer of Fun’ will kick off with a benefit concert on Sunday at the Air Conditioned Supper Club in Venice, featuring Bascom Hills and The Bryan Brothers.
“I was involved in music all through school, and it really kept me on the right path,” said Jason Sheridan, guitarist and songwriter for Bascom Hills. “It’s important to have an outlet like music, and now that school music programs are getting cut, we want to do anything we can to bring in money and help support.”
The tickets for the concert will cost $10, and a portion of each admission will go towards the Save Our Schools campaign.
Other upcoming events include a Third Street Promenade Book Fair from Aug. 1 to Aug. 7, where shoppers can present a book fair flyer to donate a portion of the sale to Save Our Schools; and a fundraiser at ZJ’s Boarding House on July 30, complete with an auction, live music, food and activities for kids.
Students from the Santa Monica High School Associated Student Body are also getting involved by hosting weekend movie nights from July 23 to Aug. 15, each with a $5 suggested donation at the door.
