“You won’t find more professional theater—for children or adults—anywhere,” raves LA PARENT and continues, “lyricist-composer Evelyn Rudie and co-scripter Chris DeCarlo consistently create the brightest, most intelligent – not to mention goofiest – family theatre in town.” Ever wondered what actually happened with Hansel and Gretel in that candy house? What really took place between the Little Mermaid and the Handsome Prince under the sea? And what does “Kamikakushi (gasp!)” really mean? Wonder no more, as Chris DeCarlo and Evelyn Rudie’s Actors’ Repertory Theatre unveils the real versions of your favorite stories in this surprising and delightful world premiere musical comedy based on Hansel & Gretel, The Little Mermaid and the Japanese legend of Kamikakushi – all rolled into one wild ride in the Playhouse’s signature commedia-circus style! Acclaimed directors Chris DeCarlo and Serena Dolinsky take audiences on truly theatrical journey, rooted in traditional story-telling and exploding into a multi-media event of epic proportions as the troupe of seven actors portray dozens of characters and physically create a candy house good enough to eat, an oceanscape with mermaids and fishies aplenty, and a mountain with gypsies, gentle dragons and a giant, talking peach. No frightening witches or evil monsters, just a wonderfully heartwarming and hilarious array of zany, loveable heroes, heroines, adventurers and magic-makers who prove that although the grass may be greener on the other side of the fence, the ocean bluer on the other side of the gulf stream, and the air clearer on the other side of the mountain, home really is where the heart is. EXTENDED through the summer by audience demand, Actually! features Abby Adams, Elodie Cammarata, Adam Jennings, Juliet Ladines, Katie Lee, Cydne Moore, Alejandra Nuñez as the actors creating the play with the participation of the audience who become part of the adventure, along the way offering a thumbs down to selfishness, gluttony, pollution and waste, assuring that the stories reach their deserved happily-ever-afters in grand style. Toe-tapping tunes by renowned songsters E. Rudie and Matthew Wrather, graphic artist Vincent’s charming projections, and award-winning designer Ashley Hayes’s amazingly quirky costumes ably support DeCarlo and Rudie’s clever and classic book. Photo opportunities with the actors after the show. Birthday and tea parties, too. Saturdays at 3:00pm, Sundays at 12:30pm.
