“I am continuously impressed! The workshops and plays are structured so that every child can be successful!” raves educator B. Clough. Daily Variety calls it “One of the best in the country!” It’s the Santa Monica Playhouse Diversity-in-Education Conservatory Play Production Experience – a spectacular once-a-week theatre session where kids 7 to 12 make friends, expand their imagination and have fun as they act, sing, dance, play theatre games, improvise and work with costumes and make-up, sets and props, collaborating with professional playwrights and directors to create an awesome fully staged original musical production written just for them.
No small parts here – no waiting in the wings – no playing the second tree or the third chorus member – no double or triple casting – every child receives a role written specifically for them, highlighting their strengths and challenging them to excel in all theatre skills, including performance and stage technique, communication, teamwork, self-confidence, projection and enunciation, focus and concentration, as well as reading and language comprehension, theatre etiquette, and a true love of and appreciation for theatre arts.
“Every child performs! Every child is featured! Every child is challenged to be the best they can be!” says theatre artist and Playhouse Director of Education Serena Dolinsky. “Young people explore all aspects of theatre, helping create a fabulous theatre piece they perform for family, friends and the public, at the end of each session.”
The internationally acclaimed Playhouse process through work locally, nationally and internationally with more than 25,000 students to day, combines the excitement of teamwork, the power of a world-renowned teaching theatre, and the joy and fulfillment of a stress-free, arts-oriented environment in which working actors share their love of the craft with young people in all stages of development. “Our daughter learned more about drama in one week with SMP than in all the productions she’s ever done – put together. We’re absolutely ecstatic!” says educator and workshop mom J. Dohr.
Playhouse conservatory alumni include Kate Hudson, Zooey Deschanel, Emily Deschanel, Jason Ritter, Jason Segel, Obi Ndefo, Shana Feste, Rina Mimoun, Newark Superintendent of Schools Cami Anderson and Maroon 5’s Mickey Madden, who calls the program “Great in so many ways!”
Enrollment open Sept 5 – Oct 19. Classes meet Oct – Jan, Thurs 4-6:30PM OR Sat 9-11:30AM.
