Santa Monica College will honor Independence Day this Saturday with fireworks and an outdoor festival.

More than 8,000 people are expected to attend the event’s 30th anniversary celebration held at SMC’s Corsair Field.

The event will feature community service booths, various food vendors and entertainment by Chris Mulkney n’ Deluxe.

Food trucks such as Meat the Greek and Cheer Burger will be at the event, SMC’s public information officer, Bruce Smith, said.

The SMC Athletics Department and Boy Scouts Troop 2 will also host booths, Smith said.

No animals are allowed at the event, but organizers advise people to bring other family members.

The Santa Monica Fire Department will have an on-site fire truck that children can climb on, and the Santa Monica Police Department will have face painting available, Smith said.

The evening will conclude with a fireworks display put on by Pyro Spectaculars, the same company used last year.

Alcoholic beverages, glass containers, barbecues and fireworks are prohibited anywhere on campus.

Picnicking is welcome, but chairs with pointed legs are not.

Gates open at 5 p.m., with entertainment at 6:45 p.m. and the fireworks at 9 p.m. The event is free. Parking is $5 and lots open at 4 p.m.
