Sam Shepard’s Flock — Not By Norman Rockwell

PLAY TIME — Sam Shepard's plays are almost always a little weird. His people live in a world of their own, usually hostile and dysfunctional. And so it is with “Buried Child”, Shepard's Pulitzer Prize-winning drama that is currently celebrating its 35th birthday at the Whitefire Theatre in Sherman Oaks. The principals in this unhappy... An Art Day Out

CULTURE WATCH — With Bergamot Art Station redevelopment leading the headlines, it’s nice to remember what Bergamot actually is: a pretty darned great collection of galleries and a local museum, all of which offer an eye-delighting and/or intellectually intriguing array of arts, open to the public. This past week on my way to hear... Read more →

Bound and Unbound

CULTURE WATCH — There's something distinctive about a Neil Simon play; the quick patter, the complex relationships, the neighborhood (Brighton Beach especially), and sometimes these elements play out poignantly and pointedly. In the case of “Broadway Bound,” just extended at The Odyssey Theatre, all the elements are there, it's just... Read more →

Fringe Binge, Part 2

CULTURE WATCH — Sadly the Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2014 ended this past Monday. But what an incredible array of arts, ranging from the unwatchably boring to the outrageously outlandish and everything in between. I sought out theatre events, but my mind can only take in so much in a week; on my busiest day I saw four productions,... Read more →
