Nan Goldin: Scopophilia

  Nan Goldin

Scopophilia

                                                                                              April 27 – June 22, 2013

Opening Friday, April 26, 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M.

Matthew Marks is pleased to announce Nan Goldin: Scopophilia, the next exhibition in his gallery at 1062 North Orange Grove, Los Angeles. This is the artist’s first exhibition in Los Angeles in fifteen years and includes her newest multi-media work Scopophilia, a 25-minute-long slide installation commissioned by the Louvre Museum, as well as a group of related photographic works, many of which are being shown for the first time.

Scopophilia, which consists of over 400 photographs culled from Goldin’s career, pairs her own autobiographical images with new photographs of paintings and sculpture from the Louvre’s collection. Organized around themes of love and desire, Scopophilia, which means “the love of looking,” reflects on Goldin’s intensely personal photographs, as well as the unique permission given to the artist to photograph freely throughout the Louvre Museum. Of this project, Goldin explains, “Desire awoken by images is the project’s true starting point. It is about the idea of taking a picture of a sculpture or a painting in an attempt to bring it to life.”

Nan Goldin’s work has been the subject of two major touring museum retrospectives, one organized in 1996 by the Whitney Museum of American Art, and another, in 2001, by the Centre Georges Pompidou. Goldin was admitted to the French Legion of Honor in 2006 and received the Hasselblad Foundation International Award in 2007. Most recently, she was awarded the 2012 Edward MacDowell medal.

Nan Goldin: Scopophilia will be on view at the Matthew Marks Gallery, 1062 North Orange Grove, from April 27th through June 22nd. Gallery hours: Tuesday through Saturday, 10:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M.

Actually Hansel & Gretel and Other Awesome Tales

“You won’t find more professional theater—for children or adults—anywhere,” raves LA PARENT and continues, “lyricist-composer Evelyn Rudie and co-scripter Chris DeCarlo consistently create the brightest, most intelligent – not to mention goofiest – family theatre in town.” Ever wondered what actually happened with Hansel and Gretel in that candy house? What really took place between the Little Mermaid and the Handsome Prince under the sea? And what does “Kamikakushi (gasp!)” really mean? Wonder no more, as Chris DeCarlo and Evelyn Rudie’s Actors’ Repertory Theatre unveils the real versions of your favorite stories in this surprising and delightful world premiere musical comedy based on Hansel & Gretel, The Little Mermaid and the Japanese legend of Kamikakushi – all rolled into one wild ride in the Playhouse’s signature commedia-circus style! Acclaimed directors Chris DeCarlo and Serena Dolinsky take audiences on truly theatrical journey, rooted in traditional story-telling and exploding into a multi-media event of epic proportions as the troupe of seven actors portray dozens of characters and physically create a candy house good enough to eat, an oceanscape with mermaids and fishies aplenty, and a mountain with gypsies, gentle dragons and a giant, talking peach. No frightening witches or evil monsters, just a wonderfully heartwarming and hilarious array of zany, loveable heroes, heroines, adventurers and magic-makers who prove that although the grass may be greener on the other side of the fence, the ocean bluer on the other side of the gulf stream, and the air clearer on the other side of the mountain, home really is where the heart is. Actually Hansel & Gretel features Abby Adams, Elodie Cammarata, Juliet Ladines, Katie Lee, Johanna Middleton, Cydne Moore and Garett Stevens as the actors creating the play with the participation of the audience who become part of the adventure, along the way offering a thumbs down to selfishness, gluttony, pollution and waste, assuring that the stories reach their deserved happily-ever-afters in grand style. The toe-tapping tunes by renowned songsters E. Rudie and Matthew Wrather, graphic artist Vincent’s charming projections and award-winning designer Ashley Hayes’s amazingly quirky costumes ably support DeCarlo and Rudie’s clever and classic book. Photo opportunities with the actors after the show. Birthday and tea parties, too. Saturdays at 3pm, Sundays at 12:30, now through June 23. Our website is under construction. About The Archer School For Girls

Founded in 1995, The Archer School for Girls is an independent school that provides a 21st-century college preparatory program for students in grades 6 through 12 in an environment that explores and refines the ways girls learn best. Cultivating a strong sense of individuality, personal identity, independence, a sense of global engagement and an array of leadership opportunities define each student’s experience. For more information, please visit our website at www.archer.org or call 310-873-7000.

About The Gallery

The Gallery at The Archer School for Girls provides a unique opportunity to experience the work of well-known artists. In addition to viewing diverse rotating exhibits, there are panel discussions and artist dinners, which bring collectors, gallery directors, artists, and curators to campus. The Gallery was established in 2006 and has featured works by more than 30 well-known artists.

The Gallery affords Archer students the opportunity to study the organization, management, and operation of a contemporary art gallery. Students develop the skills required to curate exhibitions, conceptualize and direct the installation of artwork in the gallery space, prepare educational materials, publicize and archive information related to each exhibition, and serve as docents.

The Gallery at Archer and its Student/Docent Curator Program serve as a model for local public and private schools. Archer’s Gallery Director and students have reached out to other schools to assist them in starting their own Gallery and Student Docent/Curator Programs. The outreach includes providing the information, guidelines, and mentoring for other educators to start their own program as well as ongoing guidance on how to effectively integrate it into their curriculum. Our students have also presented at local events, including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art’s Public School Evening for Educators in the Arts.

Ionescopade, A Musical Vaudeville

Taken from the plays, playlets and poetry of “Theatre of the Absurd” playwright Eugène Ionesco (Rhinoceros, The Bald Soprano, Exit the King), Ionescopade is a zany musical vaudeville featuring mime, farce and parody – all hilariously balanced on the edge of madness.

Composer/lyricist Mildred Kayden was Ionesco’s guest in his Paris apartment while creating the work, and they remained friends until his death in 1994. “Ionesco was always very loving and warm,” says Kayden, now 90. “He always insisted that life is funny. We need to look at life and find the humor in it, or we can’t take it.”

Ionescopade is a vaudeville, so it’s episodic, fast moving, a little naughty and very, very funny,” explains director and choreographer Bill Castellino. “When I first approached it in 1981, I saw it as an entertaining, silly evening of non-sequitors. Thirty years later, it all makes a new kind of sense. The world around the play has changed. Continuous access to information, multi-tasking and endless news cycles make seeming non-sequitors normal in daily life. Like a true piece of art, Ionesco’s work lived during his time, and now it continues to live in other periods.”

He continues, “Ionesco wrote during and after WWII in France, and his plays are impacted by the Nazi occupation, repression, informants, paranoia and liberation. Now, in a post-911 world, these topics resonate afresh, and that’s fascinating to me. Humanity uses laughter to survive oppression. Ionescopade shines light on this very human resilience.”

Performances of Ionescopade take place on Fridays and Saturdays @ 8 pm and Sundays @ 2 pm*, May 31 through August 11. (*On Sunday, June 2 only, the performance will be @ 5 pm with no 2 pm matinee.) Additional weeknight performances are scheduled on Wednesdays @ 8 pm on June 19, July 17 and July 31, and on Thursdays @ 8 pm on June 13, June 27, July 11 and July 25. Tickets are $30, except opening weekend (May 31, June 1 and June 2) which are $34 and include a reception with the actors. The Odyssey Theatre is located at 2055 S. Jenny Okun “Stage Projections from the Opera, Dulce Rosa” & Bruce Everett “North of Conception”

June 1 – July 6, 2013

Reception: Saturday, June 1, 4-6pm

Gallery hours: Tues-Fri, 10am-5:30pm, Sat, 11am-5:30pm

Jenny Okun’s ninth solo exhibition at Craig Krull Gallery consists of images that Okun has made to be projected on the stage of the opera, Dulce Rosa, which is being presented at the LA Philharmonic from May 17 – June 9 at the Broad Stage in Santa Monica.  Using a medium format camera, Okun creates multiple exposure photographs that are both abstract and architecturally specific.  When viewing the images, one senses the drama of Dulce Rosa as its protagonist plans revenge in a South American country.  The horizontal format of each montage of photographs transports the viewer through shifting space and light, hinting at the pacing and moods of the opera.
Concurrently, the gallery will present an exhibition of recent landscape paintings by Bruce Everett.  After spending many years in Southern California, Everett recently moved to the central coast and, like many cultural historians and geographers, he recognizes Point Conception as the border between Southern and Northern California.  Entitled, North of Conception, this exhibition includes views of the vineyards, oaks and rolling hills that characterize the Central Coast.
