Stogie Kenyatta’s The World is My Home – THE LIFE OF PAUL ROBESON

Powerful and poignant, heartfelt and humorous, Santa Monica Playhouse is proud to present a special performance of film, television and stage personality Stogie Kenyatta’s acclaimed show about African-American artist-activist Paul Robeson. Robeson – internationally renowned actor, recording artist, concert singer, football player, All-American athlete and Phi Beta Kappa Society laureate at Rugters University, was witness to the artistic wonders of the Harlem Renaissance and the Jazz/Be-bop era, the horrors of the slave trade, the shame of the Holocaust, McCarthyism, blacklists, racism and oppression. His life’s work celebrates our common humanity as he fought globally for social justice. “Armed with nothing more than the strength of his convictions and his vision of a world where men live as brothers, his message was his life,“ says Kenyatta. He shows us that in spite of our differences, we still have more in common than we do in conflict.” Jamaican born and Brooklyn bred Stogie Kenyatta has been seen on everything from sitcoms and film to soap operas, from Bernie Mac and Jake and the Fat Man to HBO’s Tyson (Co-star) to The Bold and The Beautiful. He co-headlined a USO comedy tour in Tokyo, Japan and Okinawa. “The World Is My Home – The Life of Paul Robeson” had its first performance at the National Civil Rights Museum and has become the number one show on the American college scene. Back by popular demand for one night only.

The Hebrew Hillbilly

A musical rock ’n’ roller coaster ride chronicling singer, songwriter Shelley (“The Jewish Dolly Parton”) Fisher’s Hollywood odyssey that begins in the heart of the Mississippi Delta in her hometown of Memphis, Tennessee, birthplace of Rock ‘n’ Roll, Blues and Bar-b-cue, taking a wry look back at her life and career from her early upbringing as a Jew in Memphis to her adventures in and out of the entertainment industry. Raised in the Deep South, Fisher has had success as a jazz and blues vocalist and recording artist in L.A., along with creating her own romantic-comedy cooking show, Forkplay. This funny and heartfelt show features 14 original songs, penned by Fisher along with pop composers Kenneth Hirsch and Harold Payne. Last L.A. show prior to its New York debut! Shelley has appeared on many national TV shows including Style Court on the Style Network, The Dream Team, and with Dick Clark on NBC’s The Other Half as well as on Canadian Breakfast TV in Vancouver. Accompanying Fisher are multi-platinum award-winning songwriters Ken Hirsch and Harold Payne. Hirsch has been writing hit songs for most of his life. Some of his hits include I’ve Never Been to Me for Charlene, Two Less Lonely People In The World for Air Supply, No One In The World for Anita Baker and If I Could for several artists including Barbra Streisand, Ray Charles and Celine Dion. Most recently he scored the musical version of An Officer and a Gentleman, which was nominated for 5 Helpmann awards including Best Musical. Payne, whose soulful uplifting songs and husky heartfelt vocals combined with his uncanny gift for spontaneity have graced stages around the world has written songs for such diverse artists as Rod Stewart, Patti Labelle, the Temptations & Kelly Rowland, literally from Peter Paul and Mary to Snoop Dogg. His most recent project with Rock & Roll Hall of Famer, Bobby Womack (Bravest Man in the Universe) just won 2012 Best Album of the Year for the prestigious Q awards in the UK. Veteran director Chris DeCarlo has been acting, writing and directing in Los Angeles for more than 40 years, bringing to the stage over 250 World Premieres and American Premieres, including the Ovation-nominated Picon Pie, and the LA TIMES Critics’ Pick productions Dying for Laughs starring Stuart Pankin, and Charlie Lustman’s pop operetta Made Me Nuclear.
