A 14-year veteran of the Santa Monica Fire Department is being promoted as the next fire marshall.
Assistant Fire Marshall Eric Binder will succeed Fire Marshall Nancy Johnson, who retired in September.
“Each of the candidates for the position were extremely well qualified, however, it was a blend of Eric’s vision and attention to detail that earned him the opportunity to lead the Prevention Division into the future,” Fire Chief Scott Ferguson said.
Binder was hired as the department’s fire inspector and promoted to assistant fire marshall in July 2009.
Binder holds a bachelor and master of science degrees in addition to certifications from the California State Fire Marshall.
The fire marshal is charged with guiding a team responsible for ensuring the highest degree of fire and safety standards.
“The development occurring within the community is certainly exciting; it is occurring at a rate never before experienced by our fire department,” Binder said.
