Jesus Antonio Torres, who suffered a serious injury last year, was pushed in his wheel chair along the Los Angeles Marathon’s route on Sunday, finishing the final steps on his own.

He was assisted by his brother and sister, the Santa Monica Police Department posted on its Facebook page.

On June 20, 2013, the Santa Monica Police explorer was involved in a serious accident at a local beach. Through the efforts of unidentified citizens, Los Angeles County Life Guards, Santa Monica Fire Department, and Santa Monica UCLA staff Torres was revived and began his long road to recovery.

“The members of Jesus’ extended Santa Monica Police Department family are extremely proud of the progress that Jesus continues to make on his recovery,” the statement read. “He and the Torres family are an inspiration to all of us.”
