Santa Monica youth traded beaches for books this summer, according to a  press release from City Hall.

More than 4,000 children and teenagers took part in the Santa Monica Public Library’s summer 2013 reading program, which featured 320 story times and reading-related events.

The 10-week program, sponsored by the Friends of the Santa Monica Public Library, encouraged youth to read more than 1.9 million minutes during the summer.

Attendance in the program has nearly tripled in the past decade, and involvement continues to grow, city officials said.
