DOWNTOWN — As Samohi preps for Etiwanda in the quarterfinals of the CIF-Southern Section Division 1AA boys’ basketball playoffs, they approach the game knowing a bit about their opponent.

The game today is a rematch of a regular season matchup that saw Etiwanda walk away victorious in a close contest in December.

“Everybody at this stage is better than they were in December,” Samohi head coach James Hecht said. “But, being familiar with them does help.”

After watching recent game films on Etiwanda, Hecht said that he sees the same disciplined team the Vikings faced the last meeting. He did note that they are a bit more polished this time around, but he’s not too worried.

“I think we’re a little bit better, too,” he said.

Samohi advanced to the quarterfinals by dispatching Silverado, 68-55, in the second round on Tuesday.

Samohi enters today’s game at Etiwanda as the No. 6 seed in the playoffs. Etiwanda is the No. 3 seed. The prevailing team will face the winner of the Eisenhower, Long Beach Poly game, also being played today.

The semifinals will take place at the Anaheim Arena.

Pacifica boys eliminated

Pacifica Christian’s boys’ basketball team was eliminated from the CIF-SS Division 5A playoffs by Kilpatrick, 59-54, on Tuesday.

Kilpatrick advances to face No. 1 seed Providence on Friday.

Pacifica Christian finished the regular season as co-champions of the Heritage League.
