UPLAND — Despite being up by 7 in the third quarter, Santa Monica High School’s boys’ basketball team couldn’t hold the lead en route to losing to Upland, 77-55, in the first round of the CIF-SS Division 1AA playoffs on Wednesday.
The Vikings entered the final quarter down by 2, but were unable to mount a comeback.
“We played well for three and a half quarters,” Head Coach James Hecht said. “It was kind of the story of our season.”
Despite the early exit, Hecht said he’s optimistic about next season. The team featured just three seniors with underclassmen comprising most of the squad.
“We’ll miss our seniors and appreciate what they have done for us this year,” Hecht said. “But, we’re excited about the guys we have returning who have a lot of varsity game experience.”
