LOS ANGELES — So far, so good for the No. 1 seeded New Roads baseball team.
The Jaguars easily defeated Milken Community on the road, 9-1, on Tuesday to advance to the quarter-finals of the CIF-Southern Section Division 7 playoffs.
New Roads’ Niko Delgado started the game and pitched four innings of one-run ball before being relieved by Anthony Carrillo, who pitched the remainder of the game.
“We knew they were a good team,” Carrillo said of a Milken team that was the runner up in Division 7 last season. “We’re excited about the win.”
New Roads will play the winner of North County Christian and Animo Leadership on Friday at home. The location of the 3 p.m. game has not been determined.
Pacifica Christian moves on
Also in Division 7, Pacifica Christian beat Carpinteria Cate, 2-1, Tuesday to move on to the quarterfinals.
Cate scored the game’s first run off of Pacifica Christian starting pitcher Austin Cortina, but he would settle down, ultimately pitching a complete game with 10 strikeouts, allowing just two hits en route to the victory.
Freshman Tucie Shelp was a major factor on offense. His RBI sacrifice fly scored the Seawolves’ first run and he would later score the game-winner on an error by Cate’s catcher.
“It’s nice seeing how the team has developed,” Pacifica Christian head coach Julian Chavez said of his team that is only in its third year of playing baseball. “We just have to build on this by playing strong defense and pitching well.”
Despite taking home the victory, Chavez said that he’d like to see his offense make a statement in the quarter-finals.
Pacifica Christian will play the winner of Riverside Prep and Rolling Hills Prep on Friday. The location of the game has not been revealed.
