CITYWIDE — The fields of this year’s CIF-Southern Section softball and baseball playoffs include five Santa Monica-based squads, it was announced on Monday.

The group is highlighted by Ocean League softball winner Santa Monica High School. The Vikings, two years removed from a CIF-SS title in the sport, are coming off their 12th straight league crown.

Samohi will host La Quinta on Thursday at Memorial Park to open the Division 4 postseason. La Quinta was the third place finisher in the Garden Grove League. The game begins at 3:15 p.m.

“We can’t give away free bases,” Head Coach Debbie Skaggs said. “We still haven’t played our best game of the season. This would be a good time to make that happen.”

The Vikings will start Sara Garcia on the mound.

Also in softball, St. Monica will host Marymount in a Division 5 wild card game today at Memorial Park. The game begins at 3:15 p.m.

St. Monica finished third in the Camino Real League.

The baseball playoffs feature a trio of area teams with Coastal League winner New Roads leading the pack. The No. 3 ranked team in Division 7 opens with a home game Friday against the winner of a wild card game to be played today between Southwestern Academy and Public Safety Academy. Friday’s game will begin at 3:15 p.m. The location hasn’t been announced.

Samohi enters the Division 3 baseball playoffs on the road Friday at San Gabriel Valley League winner Downey. The Vikings, the second place team in the Ocean League, will start Adam Padilla on the mound.

“It’s Adam’s senior year, so far I’ve gone with my senior leader to start games,” Head Coach Sheldon Philip-Guide said of his pitching choice.

Rounding out the group is Pacifica Christian baseball. The Seawolves finished second in the Heritage league this season. They will host Newbury Park Adventist on Wednesday at North Venice Little League in Division 7 wild card play. The game begins at 1:30 p.m.
