Realizing the need for the citizens of Santa Monica to be informed and engaged in the issues facing a diverse city, the Santa Monica Daily Press was founded in 2001 by three newspaper veterans.

Owned and operated by Santa Monica residents, the Daily Press strives to be a driving force in affecting change within the community, as well as serving as a watchdog on local government and providing a forum for people to participate in local civics.

As the only daily newspaper in Santa Monica, the Daily Press covers issues most important to its residents, including education, crime, business, the environment, politics, government and much more.

We're members of the Associated Press, the National Newspaper Association, the California Newspaper Association and the Santa Monica Chamber of Commerce.

Our mission is to inform and educate our readers about issues that affect the quality of life and business in Santa Monica. We also hope to provide a forum where people can engage in debate, further connecting one another through public dialogue.

The Daily Press serves as a point of reference in the community — whether it’s through coverage of issues, news or local events, or advertising, which offers the public a place to find the best deals in town and who’s offering the lunch special for the day.

When the Outlook folded in 1998, Santa Monica lost its only newspaper. In 2001, the Los Angeles Times closed its Westside Weekly section, eliminating the majority of coverage in Santa Monica.

Our intent is keep those who work, live and play in Santa Monica abreast of what is happening in one of the most vibrant and diverse communities in the Los Angeles area.

The Santa Monica Daily Press' parent company, Newlon Rouge LLC, was founded by three partners - Dave Danforth, Ross Furukawa and Carolyn Sackariason — all of whom have extensive newspaper backgrounds.

All three partners worked together at the Aspen Daily News, where Furukawa was the publisher and Sackariason was the editor. Newlon Rouge, llc is associated with 10 other free daily newspapers, all of which focus on local, hard news.

As part of the Santa Monica community, the Santa Monica Daily Press supports local, grassroots charities, such as The Boys and Girls Club of Santa Monica, the Santa Monica YMCA, Police Activities League, and many others. The Daily Press has established a scholarship program for local high school students that will be studying journalism in college.

The Daily Press plans to be as integral to the Santa Monica community as the ocean and the beach for decades to come.
